I can't take credit for the photo - but I know it's in Santa Fe. I grew up in New Mexico, so the luminaria's are very familiar to me. They're small paper bags with a shovel of sand in them to keep them grounded. They are lit with a single candle in each bag. One Christmas eve when I was about 8 or 10 one of them blew over and caught my grandmother's lawn on fire (very dry grass in New Mexico in December). Luckily some passers by saw it and they were able to start to put the fire out while they alerted us inside.
There are entire neighborhoods in Albuquerque that put on huge luminaria displays every Christmas eve; the Albuquerque country club area and the Ridgecrest neighborhood. The police now have to close off the streets due to the traffic, but it's nice to walk through.
If you ever get a chance to travel to the southwest United States - you must go see Santa Fe. It's absolutely beautiful. The entire town is in pueblo or territorial style architecture (except for the cathedral, which looks like it was picked up right out of Europe and dropped in the center of town).
Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas!!!
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas New Leaf!
ReplyDeleteHi there, NewLeaf
ReplyDeleteI hope you're having a good Christmas - best wishes for a happy New Year!
The photo is interesting: very seasonal, with bright lights amidst the snow, and some unusual architecture. Could you tell us a bit more about it?
Take care
Mark
